A Motorcycle Adventure | Iain Crockart
September 2007, 30 bikers, 4 guides, 6 mechanics and medical support went to the Himachal Pradesh region of India. We rode our 500cc Royal Enfield Bullets to a height of 17,000ft. The Bullet is manufactered in India and has been virtually unchanged since the 1950’s.
The photographs record our journey. Iain Crockart
The following is an extract from an email, received shortly before departure to India.“Riding in the Himalayas is unlike anywhere else on earth, many of the roads are under constant threat of collapse and landslide and we must be flexible in our approach to tackling them. A simple error could be your last if not travelling at the proper speed with total concentration. Be careful when looking over the edge as the terrain is very unsta- ble, remote locations make access to medical help difficult if not impossible so on the trip we have one surgeon and one GP, and one paramedic with an understanding of roadside trauma, travelling with us all the way.We also have an altitude suit and oxygen as well as a full medical kit. Altitude related illnesses can be thought of as a spectrum of disorders from the com- mon and relatively mild Acute Mountain Sickness to the life threatening forms such as High Altitude Pulminorary Edema and High Altitude Cerebral Edema.”Simon Smith, organser www.endurohimalaya.com
