Born and raised within the London city limits, Dexter Navy is but one figure within the new wave of creativity emerging from the UK capital right now. Armed with a camera, the 22 year-old has ventured out photographing some of our generation’s most interesting faces, using social media and raw talent to build a profile of his own along the way.With a business schedule that now sees him darting between London, Los Angeles and Paris, Navy is firmly settled in the scene, his portfolio featuring the likes of M.I.A., Billionaire Boys Club, Odd Future and A$AP Rocky to name but a few. For the next few days the photographer will flip the lens and become the subject in his first ever exhibition – ’36 by Dexter Navy’.Inspired by 35mm film and its typical 36-exposure limit, Navy has compiled 36 of his favourite photographs to be exhibited at the Hoxton Gallery. Presented conceptually as a singular roll of film – with all photos shot on Navy’s point-and-shoot Yashica T4 camera – the exhibition hopes to capture the spirit of youth and spontaneity that has embodied the photographer’s work so far.As the digital world has made life faster and more streamlined than ever – a world wherein a digital camera can take 50 shots in a few seconds – the transient but concrete nature of moments in time is something that film photography seems to bring to the fore, and this is certainly something that comes through in Navy’s wild and wonderful Tumblr wherein each day is unfathomably different but the spirit captured perfectly. Condensed to 36 photographs in a single gallery, one can expect this to be a visually powerful exhibition.’36 by Dexter Navy’ is presented by a number of names* and launches at the Hoxton Gallery on the Kingsland Road tonight at 7pm.
