Group Show | Bigger Than God

Cast your mind back to the early 90s… if you were actually born then. The US dominated grunge movement had died pretty much at the moment Kurt Cobain decided to shoot himself above a garage in Seattle and subsequently the world of alternative music had a massive creative vacuum. But just as the sun was setting across the Atlantic, culture’s musical pendulum swung towards the UK and Britpop emerged from the grubby streets of Britain, running into the open like a gang of snotty kids spoiling for a fight.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhPkwO0UoJ8

Luckily the likes of photographers Chris Floyd, Pat Pope and Harry Borden were there to capture it all. Floyd began his career at the age of 18 by calling up every major music publication in the UK offering his services before finally landing some freelance work for Loaded. The magazine promptly sent him across London to shoot a new band as they were about to release their debut single. That band just happened to be Oasis.Now, those fine folks at Dalston based digital print designers The Printspace have curated an inspired exhibition of the work of Floyd, Pope, Borden and many others, bringing together the spirit and attitude of the mid-to-late 90s British music scene. The exhibition contains images of all the greats of the era including Oasis, Blur, Primal Scream and Sean Ryder as well as the likes of Beck and Michael Stipe. But be quick, the exhibition, housed at the Hoxton Gallery in East London, runs until 23 December.
